Behavioral Economics and Consumer Choice on Amazon’s Digital Platform

Abstract: This paper examines how behavioral economics explains consumer decision-making within Amazon’s digital marketplace. The research asks to what extent Amazon’s platform design systematically leverages cognitive biases to influence purchasing behavior and strengthen market dominance. Reviewing behavioral economics literature and empirical studies on digital choice architecture, the paper analyzes three central biases: status quo bias, anchoring, and loss aversion, and evaluates their implementation in Amazon’s interface design. Through case-based analysis of subscription renewals, pricing displays, free trials, default shipping options, and algorithmic product rankings, the study demonstrates how cognitive tendencies are embedded into platform architecture. The findings suggest that Amazon’s growth reflects not only logistical efficiency and innovation but also the strategic operationalization of predictable behavioral patterns. While these mechanisms often increase convenience and reduce cognitive effort, they also raise concerns regarding transparency and consumer autonomy. Understanding how behavioral design functions at scale is essential for evaluating fairness and regulatory implications in modern digital commerce.
